What Kind Of Disabilities Does NDIS Cover?

What Is NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a support program started by the Australian government in the year 2020. With this disability scheme, the government provides funds to people with any significant or permanent impairment. It aims to help them build independent lives and reach their dreams. Over the last few years, NDIS has helped thousands of people reach their goals and aims to continue doing that.

EnableU provides disability services in Sydney. They are registered NDIS providers who can help you build independent lives.

How Does It Work?

If someone wants to become a participant of NDIS, they need to check the eligibility guidelines first to identify whether they are suitable for the program or not. Once they have determined their eligibility, they can fill out the application form and submit all the required documents. NDIS approves their request after analysing their application, and once their application is approved, they can have a planning meeting with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). Participants can request the support they deem necessary for their condition; however, NDIS will assess the request and then allow the funding as it strictly funds for things related to the participant’s goals. Any extra expenditures are not covered under NDIS funding.

Disabilities Under NDIS

NDIS provides support for a wide range of disabilities, from permanent to early intervention for children. To qualify for NDIS support, the participant needs to be diagnosed with one of the following disabilities.

  • Permanent blindness
  • Permanent deafness
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Autism
  • Down Syndrome
  • Patau Syndrome
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Rett Syndrome
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Genetic conditions, etc.

NDIS provides individualised support for all disabilities. For example, if a participant has a permanent intellectual disability, it might affect his way of living, and NDIS funds for the therapies one needs in that situation. Speech and behavioural therapy are two of the types that are funded under NDIS.

Children who are under 7 but have permanent impairments that will lead to developmental delays like down syndrome can also access these disability services. In this case, no assessment for the disability is necessary, and parents can receive support through Carer Payment. Families with these difficult situations need financial, psychological, and physical support and NDIS understands that well.

What Is Not Included In NDIS?

NDIS provides funding for many different services, but there are also some things that NDIS does not fund. You need to ensure that you are aware of the stuff, so you don’t waste your time requesting those. Anything unrelated to the participant’s goal will not be funded under NDIS. For instance, suppose your goal is to find a job for yourself, but you are requesting funds for gym equipment; in this case, NDIS will decline your request. You need to make sure that whatever you request must be related to your final goal, and if you can justify your request, NDIS will accept it.

Another thing that NDIS does not fund is the rent and basic expenses of your house. You cannot expect NDIS to pay your rent because that doesn’t come under the funding criteria of NDIS. They can provide you funds for the modifications you need to bring to your house or car to help you become more independent, but you cannot use your NDIS funding for your rent and bills.

NDIS also doesn’t fund anything that can be harmful to the participants, so make sure you don’t make any such requests. And lastly, NDIS does not support anything that falls under the responsibility of another government or community centre.
